SHELL has denied allegations of neglect levied against it by some members of Kula, Belema communities in Akukutoru local government area, stressing that it had continued to discharge its corporate social responsibilities to communities in the area.
Meantime, some members of the community yesterday occupied the oil giant’s flow station and gas plant in the community, demanding that its license be revoked and re awarded to an indigenous oil firm.
Spokesman of Shell, Joseph Obari in a statement said the firm through Kula Project Implementation and Monitoring Committee, PIMC had spent several millions of naira on social investment projects and university scholarship programmess for students of the area
The statement reads in part, : “SPDC JV restates commitment to development of host communities, as it debunks allegations of neglect of Kula, Belema communities
The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd operated Joint Venture (SPDC JV) has said its commitment to the welfare of host communities in the Niger Delta remains unshaken, even as it decried the illegal occupation of Belema Flow Station and Gas Plant today (August 11) by some persons. SPDC has informed the authorities of the illegal occupation and is working towards resuming safe operations.
Debunking allegations of neglect of communities in Kula kingdom and Belema in Rivers State, SPDC said it had implemented a Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) in the area that led to a wide variety of social investment projects including university scholarships awards
